Now if this news doesn’t shock you nothing will. Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari is happy with the performance of team Nigeria at the just concluded Rio Olympic Games.
The ministerZ who was at the Villa yesterday to brief the president on the outcome of Nigeria’s participation in the Olympics, absolved himself from the poor performance of Nigeria’s athletes, told reporters that president Buhari commended team Nigeria for doing the country proud.
Wow! Let’s pause a moment because this needs deliberating upon, he (the sports minister) absolved himself from the poor performance of the team, that means he acknowledged the fact that Team Nigeria performed terribly at the games. But his principal, (the President) commended the team for doing the country proud. Oh My! Is there something am missing? Because I’m at a loss at this point. ‘WHAT ON EARTH IS HAPPENING!!!?
Ok let me quote him, maybe I made a mistake somewhere. In his words, Dalung said “all I did was to brief the President on our performance, the challenges we had, the progress we made because in 2016, Nigeria was celebrated. Two Nigerian athletes, Aruna Quadri and Chierika Ukogu were recognized internationally in Rio, that happening is an achievement”.
“He (President Buhari) also appreciated our performance and thanked us for doing the country proud and keep the flag flying. He challenged us to do more for the country to move sports forward”.
If truly our dear President said all this, then he is definitely disconnected from the happenings in the country. Clearly he doesn’t watch television. Kenya who to our standard performed reasonably well at the game is currently investigating what went wrong because to their standard, they had a poor outing caused by administrative problems. That shows a county that wants to make progress and will make progress.
But in Nigeria, not a briefing from the minister nor the federations head as to what went wrong. No action from the president instead he is congratulating the team for doing the country proud. I don’t know whether to cry or laugh right now. But the truth is, it is painful and very sad that we are not learning anything and we seem proud of it.
Anyway the minister concluded by saying “we need to go back to the grassroots and groom talents for future competitions”.
Now that a good one. Hopefully he matches his words with action because a lot of talent are hoping we get that aspect right prtty soon.
